Oliver Thomas is here!

My mother’s intuition was not in full swing today boy!  I woke up and felt contractions most of the morning but it wasn’t too unbearable.  Seeing as though 4 days earlier I found myself in Labor and Delivery with contractions 5-6 minutes apart only to be sent home because I was only dilated to 1cm,  I didn’t want to get my hopes up too high to only be turned away again.

I spent the morning hanging around with Dexter and playing with him but my contractions were becoming pretty regular.  I called the doctor’s office and they told me that it doesn’t sound like anything and to just keep my appointment with the doctor for the next day.  Dexter and I laid down around 12:30 for a nap but once I got to bed my back started hurting and my contractions were starting to hurt a little more.  I managed to get a small nap in and Dexter woke me up around 2:30.  At that point Daddy was home from work and he could tell that I was in quite a bit of pain.  We started timing my contractions and they were painful and consistent at 5 minutes apart.  I was in denial that this could be it but after Daddy persuaded me to go in to be checked out, I gave in.

We arrived at the hospital at 4:05 pm on October 26th, 2010.  I headed right into Labor and Delivery and was there being monitored for quite some time before the nurse came to check me.  She was on the phone with Jan, my midwife (who was not on call).  I was 5cm dilated and at a zero station!  Definite labor!!  I was checked into my room just before 5:00 and Jan told me that she would be able to stay and deliver Oliver!  I was elated!

I didn’t waste any time getting into the hot tub in my room.  I spent the first hour in the tub and it was so nice.  Just as I was getting out, my friend Becky was coming to bring me some gummi worms (and support).  I labored the rest of the time standing and swaying until around 7:00 when the nurse checked me and I was 8cm dilated!  I felt a lot of pressure in my bottom so she called Jan in who broke my water at 7:06 to get things going.  The pressure was intense but with three good pushes Oliver Thomas was born at 7:27pm weighing 8 pounds 1 ounce.  He weighed more than Dexter did by about 6 ounces but he is one inch shorter and his head is huge at 14 1/2cm!

Daddy and I couldn’t be more thrilled and excited.  We are so in love with this little man and we can’t help to feel complete.  We can’t wait for big brother Dexter to come and meet “Baby Ollie” for the first time!

The ULTIMATE Family Vacation

Sponsored By:

Cheerios® is giving you the chance to win a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, your ultimate family vacation. As part of a paid promotion for their “Do What You Love” Sweepstakes, Cheerios® is sponsoring my post today about what my ultimate family vacation would be. Read mine, Enter the Sweepstakes for a chance to actually win your own fantasy family trip or one of a bunch of other great prizes.

You know, being as pregnant as I am, I am READY for a vacation.  A vacation away from this huge belly, a vacation away from the hustle and bustle of every day life and a vacation that involves no worrying.  Before I got pregnant for the first time my now husband and I planned on traveling before we settled down and had a family.  That idea was cut short when we found out we were expecting (Pill fail!).  I had dreamed of the lush rolling hills of Ireland, the delicious foods and wines of Italy and Big Ben in England.  The surprise pregnancy scared me and made me feel as though I will never travel the world as I once hoped.  Well, today I am expecting baby number 2 (our last child) and I dream of family vacations and couple retreats.  It seems like the light is starting to shine its way through the tunnel.

When I lay in bed at night I like to talk to my husband about my dreams and my aspirations.  I tell him about how I would love to take the boys to places such as the Grand Canyon, Washington DC and Disney World.  I often find myself day dreaming about giving my family the knowledge and culture that I never had as a child.  I haven't been to the Grand Canyon (I've flown over it) and I haven't visited our nation's capitol.  These are items on my checklist of life.  I think that it is family vacations like these that are not only fun and exciting but also double as great learning experiences!

I live in Michigan and this state is very beautiful.  Many people travel to Michigan to enjoy our gorgeous beaches, fall foliage and Mackinac Island.  Very few people realize that Michigan is actually two separate peninsulas.  I grew up in the UP and I now live in the LP (Upper Peninsula and Lower Peninsula).  Mackinac Island is such a great day trip for us to take (better if you take a couple of days) because you get to experience fun things such as ferry rides, horse-draw carriage tours and historic buildings.  The governors mansion is also nestled on the Island.  Don't forget the Mackinaw Bridge which is the longest suspension bridge in the Americas!

No matter where we choose to vacation as a family the most important thing is that we are together.  Spending quality time as a family is priceless and something that I very much look forward to in the days ahead as a family of 4!

Don’t forget to enter the “Do What You Love” Sweepstakes, for a chance to win your own ultimate family vacation. I was selected for this sponsorship by the Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity, as I do.

Tillamook Cheese Review and Giveaway

I love cheese afterall I am a cheesehead from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  I will even go as far as to show you a picture of me in my favorite cheese shop in the world-Joe's Cheesehouse in Marinette, Wisconsin!  How sexy is this?  Oh yeah, that is a cheese koozie in my hand!

Tillamook is a 100 year-old farmer-owned and operated dairy cooperative.  This means that the farmers make all the decisions and have their hands in each and every batch of cheese that is made at their farm.  This also means that the quality of their cheese are unsurpassed.  Read about their wonderful cheese-making process here.  I was lucky enough to receive a few coupons so that I can try their cheese.  I chose their extra sharp cheddar because I LOVE LOVE LOVE Extra Sharp Cheddar.  This cheese is very good, so much so that my cheese-snob husband liked it too.  The only thing that I was not too excited about was the fact that this cheese is yellow.  I usually do not buy artificially dyed cheese as I prefer a nice really sharp white cheddar.  The cheese also had a higher moisture content than most of the extra sharps that I eat (which crumble very easily).  There are not too many stores around here that carry Tillamook but you can also order online.  I would really like to try their Vintage White Extra Sharp Cheddar to see if it holds up to my all time favorite from Joe's in WI.

How would you like to try some of their awesome cheese?  One lucky winner will receive an Orange Loaf box complete with coupons to try their Baby Loaf, shreds and slices for free!  You will also receive a cheese slicer and a heart-shaped sandwich cutter!

Just tell me which cheese from Tillamook you would like to try first!

Incorporating Fun into Every Day Activities

Have you heard about The Hub?  I hadn't until recently so let me share with you what I know....

About The Hub:

The Hub, a NEW TV channel for kids and families where great things Come TOGETHER!

The Hub will have shows that seamlessly blends play with curiosity. Featuring original animation, live-action series, game shows and specials, The Hub will entertain, enlighten, empower and educate kids and families.

The Hub's schedule is designed to address the viewing needs of the entire family. MORNINGS on The Hub are all about the HubBub block, developed to spark preschooler imaginations and make learning fun. AFTERNOONS and early evenings are Kid's Prime, attracting kids 6 to 12 with clever stories, multidimensional characters and unexpected heroes. PRIME-TIME programming will showcase original and acquired series as well as movies selected for the whole family to enjoy.

As someone who is trained as an early childhood educator, I know the importance of teaching my child the basics (ABCs, 123s etc)  How does one go about this task without making the child feel as though they are learning.  That is the question!  Here are my tips on how to introduce fun and learning into everyday activities:

1.  I feel that it is a no-brainer to count things as we take them out and put them away.  For instance, when we are putting toys away or puzzle pieces away I always count them.  This has helped his counting skills tremendously!

2.  I let Dexter help me cook.  This helps him to learn counting too (tablespoons, cups etc) but it also teaches him patience and an appreciation for food.  He loves to "mix" and it doesn't hurt to have an extra mouth to lick the spoon :)

3.  We sing a lot.  Everything turns into a song at our house.  For example, when we wash our hands I sing "tops and bottoms, tops and bottoms, fingers too, fingers too" to the tune of Are You Sleeping....  This helps him learn the fundamentals like handwashing.  It also helps when brushing teeth too!

4.  Believe it or not but watching TV can also be a learning/fun experience.  During commercial breaks I run to Dexter and tickle him or tell him to catch me.  We run around the house and exercise while his show is on a break (don't think he watches a lot of TV because that isn't the case).  It is just good to get the willies out!

5.  Dexter is obsessed with reading and this makes me so happy.  Being a reading teacher my house is full of children's books.  How do I make reading fun you ask?  I make funny voices up for the different characters and I point out words that I think he would like.  He can already read several words due to this small little activity.  Its pretty amazing to watch a 2 year old pick out a book, open it up and point to works and read them.  I know I am proud!

6.  I like to allow my child a lot of independence and one way to accomplish this is by giving them choices on what we will do.  For instance, he picks out the activities that we do, the destination when we go for a walk, what he eats etc.  It is like a choose your own adventure book for him and it is not only fun for him to do but it makes him feel grown up and what child doesn't like that feeling?

7.  Now that I am on bedrest I do a lot of work from home whether it be blogging or just social media coordinating.  This isn't an easy feat with a toddler in the house so I put a second desk for Dexter next to my desk.  In his drawers he has his own pens, pencils, crayons and paper and he "works" with Mommy.  Oh darn, that reminds me that I was going to buy him some kid scissors today because he is fascinated by "cut cut".  This is such a cool thing to watch because he likes to emulate what I do and it teaches him responsibility and accountability for his own things.

8.  Bed time is always a stressful time for any parent but you can make it fun without going overboard.  Dexter picks his own pajamas out and picks out which stories we'll read.  I usually take a blanket from the couch into his toy room and I pick out a "super secret book" or two and hide them under the blankie.  This adds an element of surprise to his nighttime routine as he doesn't know which book we'll read next.  He loves this new activity and it also helps build a climax and resolution before bed so there are no surprises as to when bedtime occurs.

9.  Dexter and I run a lot of errands.  Even when I was working I only did so at night and on the weekends which leaves a lot of time during the day for us to get things accomplished.  When we are out and about I make sure to point out neat things that Dexter can spot from his carseat.  I will ask questions like, "where is the yellow bike" or "do you see the little doggie?"  He always gets a kick out of helping me look for things because he thinks its his "mittin" (mission).  By making little missions like this it helps him to learn his colors and it gives him a sense of self-worth by being my big helper.

10.  Music is a HUGE component to my day.  I love to listen to it in the car, at the house, actually all the time.  I recently gave Dexter my old iPhone so he could have his own to play songs, games etc.  He always puts on Jack Johnson or Dave Matthews which I love love love but it cracks me up because I have over 3,000 songs on that iPhone.  Music is such a great way to express mood and thought and I often times will find Dex sitting in his play room listening to music and putting a puzzle together.  I played several instruments throughout school and I am very musical.  I hope that is one thing that Dexter will acquire from me but I don't think I have anything to worry about, really!

What are some ways that you add fun and play into your child's everyday activities?  I would love to know!

Taco Night with MyBlogSpark and Old El Paso Giveaway {closed}

Congrats #50 Louis!

Photobucket

I always have joked that I must be part Mexican because I love Mexican food.  I love it all.  Rice, beans, tacos, enchiladas, queso fresco, chihuahua cheese, tamales etc.  When I met my husband I realized that we both shared a love for this particular cuisine.  He, being a chef, makes AMAZING Mexican food even your abuela would be proud of!

Fast forward to Dexter, the love of my life....this child ADORES Mexican food too and its not because we force it on him either.  He loves anything wrapped in a tortilla really.  We never need a reason for Taco Night in our house but when MyBlogSpark approached me about doing an Old El Paso Taco Night I thought OH YEAH, PARTY!!  Too bad I am too pregnant for some Dos Equis too!  That will have to wait until our annual Cinco de Mayo party!  Tequila, wait for me!

Last night my wonderful husband came home with 5 pounds of chicken to put in our Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker to make shredded chicken!  Bestill. My. Heart.  He also bought 3 pounds of ground beef to make TACOS!!  When we do taco night we go all out because they make amazing leftovers for the rest of the week and what doesn't get eaten (as if) gets frozen!

The Old El Paso taco seasoning mix selection includes flavors like Burrito, Cheesy Taco, Chili, Fajita, Taco, Mild Taco and even a seasoning with 40% less sodium.  We used the Original Taco Seasoning.
Photobucket

To be honest, we usually do not use packaged taco seasoning because my husband makes his own but Old El Paso's was just as good!  We all really enjoyed it!  Here are a couple of pictures that I snagged of Dexter on Taco Night at the Smith House!

Onions, Cilantro, Lettuce and Limes that my husband put into neat little piles.  You can also catch a glimpse of the chicken and beef too!

I am Nesting and I Can't Stop Staring at His Fuzzi Bunz!

I am Nesting!  Not too big of a surprise given that I am over 37 weeks pregnant!  I cannot wait to meet my little man and smother him in love.  I have often wondered since becoming a Mom if anyone in my son's life will ever get as many kisses as I do?! <3  I must get close to 20 every on a good day!

Well between laundering clothes and folding them and putting them away, then pulling them out and straightening them up to looking at his new cloth diapers, I am obsessed.  I started cloth diapering (CDing) Dexter when he was about 10 months old.  I have tried many different cloth diapers over the years and my one true favorite have been Fuzzi Bunz.  I love the snaps, the pocket and the ease of use.  I use a wet bag and I wash diapers every other day (not any more now that we are potty trained!!).  My husband never minded cloth diapering, in fact, since he is the oldest of 4 he remembers CDing his youngest brother.  We use a diaper sprayer (which is heaven-sent) to get all of the solids out of the diapers before they are put in the bag.

Recently I talked with Fuzzi Bunz about cloth diapering a newborn.  I am nervous since I haven't done this before!  I told them how much I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Fuzzi Bunz and I told them that I am devout!  In exchange for my devotion (and some advertising and posts) they sent me Oliver's first itty bitty baby diapers!  I opted for Smalls since XSmall won't last as long.  Fuzzi Bunz makes One-Size diapers but I don't like them nearly as much as I like my Perfect Size.  Sure, it may cost a little more in the end but I am still saving a lot of money not buying sposies and I am helping the environment!  Who doesn't love that?!

Wanna know where you can get some cheap Fuzzi Bunz?  Fuzzi Bunz' online store has their Small and Medium Perfect Size (new colors) on sale for $14.95 plus free shipping!  How awesome is that?  I really want a couple of the Kumquat as it looks delicious.

Now that I have made you wait so long do you wanna see what makes me drool every.single.time?

Just so you know, the buttercream colored one that is in this picture I procured myself at BlogHer, it wasn't sent for this mission (its a Medium).

Whataya think?  Purdy aren't they?

Lets Talk About Birthdays the 1800FLOWERS Way-Delivering Smiles

I often times send flowers to my friends and family for different reasons.  Mothers Day and Birthdays seem to the the biggest ones in my book.

With more newborns arriving during the late summer and early fall then any other time of year, October is the perfect time to celebrate birthdays - In fact, America’s Most Common Birthday will be celebrated nationwide on October 5!  Weird that I am due to have this baby in a common time of year.  I certainly hope that this won't hurt my chances of getting a hot tub in my birthing suite at the hospital!

1800FLOWERS wants to make it easy to celebrate with their gorgeous flower arrangements.  Look how special these flowers are:

Photobucket
Birthday Flower Cake - Our signature floral birthday cake may look good enough to eat, but it's actually crafted from fresh pastel flowers such as mini carnations and poms. It arrives in a bakery box with a set of candles where available, and with proper care, can last days after the celebration is complete.

Photobucket
Bucket of Birthday Wishes - Our stylish birthday arrangement of roses, carnations and more will make their smile grow by the bucket-ful!
Cupcake in Bloom - Send an unforgettable surprise that will be the talk of the table--our fabulous cupcake-shaped arrangement of fresh carnations! It's an Everything Cupcake™ for every occasion!

I encourage you to visit www.facebook.com/1800flowers or www.twitter.com/1800flowers for details on how 1-800-FLOWERS.COM will be celebrating Birthdays in your area!

**Look out for another 1800FLOWERS post to come soon after baby arrives!  You will see a review and get to participate in a giveaway too!**

36 Weeks 3 Days

I cannot believe that in about 3 weeks I will be welcoming another child into my heart and into my home!  Look how round I am!!  I cannot wait for Oliver to come (and take me out of all of this pain!)  Oh, did I mention that I am now on bedrest and have been for over a week now?  I am going stir crazy!

I am featured on o2o

Those of you who aren't familiar with o2o must be living in a cave!  They are responsible for many amazing blogger/business relationships, reviews and posts.  They loved my new Wisk post so much that they featured it on their blog!

I'm thrilled and honored to be there but it appears that they chose me because my son is cute.  Even though I agree with them it would have been nice if it was because they like my intellectual writing abilities lol

Wisk-Tailgate Party Experiment

Here is a recap of the new Wisk, in case you weren't paying attention on my last two posts :

New Wisk laundry detergent is reinventing the way you’ll look at stains with a powerful new formula and a red-hot bottle.

As the first liquid laundry detergent to market in 1956, Wisk® has been cleaning America’s laundry for the past 50 yearsNow, they’ve upgraded their formula, but not their price, to     tackle stains.

Wisk is bringing science to stain fighting with an upgraded formula featuring Stain Spectrum™ Technology.  Wisk’s enzymes and cleaning agents target the full range of stains on a molecular level for a powerful clean.

Wisk is introducing a powerful new stain fighting formula and a new way to talk about stains in a reinvention that is likely to be as iconic as the brand’s legendary “ring around the collar” campaign.

New Wisk® with Stain Spectrum™ Technology is engineered to target the major stain groups
New stain vocabulary:

There are hundreds of different stains but most stains fall into three major groups:
 * Carbohydrates such as milk chocolate
 * Proteins such as grass
 * Oils such as peanut butter
New powerful stain fighting formula. It doesn’t matter which of these stains you encounter, new Wisk with Stain Spectrum ™Technology  is the solution to tackle them all

Wisk is available in August at major retailers nationwide, such as Walmart, Target and Kroger
       * Suggested Retail Price:  $5.99 for 50 fl oz. bottles that cleans 32 loads
        Visit Wisk.com to:
Learn more about Wisk’s Stain Spectrum™ Technology and the different categories of stains

I was asked to conduct an experiment with Dexter regarding carbohydrate stains.  For this quest we used ketchup.  I know how hard tomato stains are to get out of clothing so I was ready for the challenge (well it wasn't really a challenge with Wisk but you get the point).

Here you will see, in pictures, Dexter painting ketchup on the white shirt and then my efforts to "Wisk it Away"  The shirt was too big for Dexter to wear to simulate him spilling ketchup on his shirt so I had him paint the shirt instead!

        PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

After Dexter got ketchup on the shirt, I wiped the excess off with a dry washcloth.  I then poured on the Wisk and rubbed on the ketchup for about 15-20 seconds.  I then let the Wisk penetrate the stain for 5 minutes.  After the 5 minutes elapsed, I rinsed the shirt in warm water and presto, the stain was gone!  In fact, you will notice that I only pretreated the larger tomato stains and that there were several smaller stains that actually washed out when all the suds formed when I was rinsing the shirt!!

Overall I am super impressed with Wisk and I cannot believe that something this unbelievable costs under $6!

**This post was compensated as part of the Wisk Campaign with One2One Network.  The information, details, and thoughts are completely my own, especially my desire to eradicate stains from my family's clothing!**
